Happy birthday Interstate!

We officially turn 70 tomorrow, and as we celebrate 70 years of Top Hat® Service this year, we want to express our sincere appreciation to all of our customers who over the years have given us the opportunity to serve them.  And, our deepest gratitude to our dedicated employees for making 70 years of moving forward possible.

Company History

In 1943, Arthur E. Morrissette founded Interstate with a used truck, a dolly and a vision of providing quality moving with “Top Hat® Service.”  He recognized that the process of relocating families involved much more than just moving furniture, and believed that individuals’ household possessions represented both their lives, past and present, and needed to be treated with utmost care and respect.

The Company began its operations out of a small storage facility in Washington, D.C.  During the early winter months, Morrissette found himself supplementing his moving income with proceeds from the sale of Christmas trees and firewood.  In 1949, Interstate handled its first long-distance move, a shipment of household goods bound to Syracuse, New York.  Later that year, Interstate conducted its first international move.

After a disastrous fire in 1970, the company moved its headquarters to Springfield, Virginia, where it currently resides today.  A year later, Interstate acquired Star Worldwide Forwarders, which became Interstate International, Inc. in 1979.

For more than half a century, the Interstate team has built a foundation of trust, partnerships, and service excellence. Interstate distinguishes itself with key industry certifications, including ISO 9001:2008, FAIMPlus, IOMI, as well as numerous industry awards.

Family owned and operated, The Interstate Family of Companies encompasses a team of more than 220 professionals, maintaining over 300 vehicles, and consisting of over 1,500 global service partners. Interstate encompasses five distinct companies that provide global transportation, supply chain logistics and relocation management solutions to individuals, corporations and government agencies.

Seven decades later, the $100 million enterprise proudly celebrates its 70th year in business.  With three generations of family leadership, the company continues to operate under the founding beliefs that quality, innovation, and training are key to a successful moving company.

Interstate Delivers Toys for Tots As a Treasured Annual Tradition

Interstate is very excited to be a collection site for toys for the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program again this year! For the 21st consecutive year, Interstate will be delivering the toys to the Barry Farm community in Southeast Washington, D.C. This is a treasured Christmas Eve tradition for the Morrissette family, the owners and founders of Interstate, as well as its employees who volunteer to take the toys to more than 200 families and 800 children living in Barry Farm.  Interstate has an affinity for the Barry Farm neighborhood because the company was founded just blocks way; the spot was also site of its headquarters until 1971; and three generations of the Morrissette’s were born and/or raised nearby.

Interstate has been working with Barry Farm’s Residential Council to collect the ages and genders of children from participating families to assure appropriate toys are gifted.  Donations were accepted at Interstate’s Springfield and Sterling, VA locations, as well as at its facility in Landover, MD in November and December, in conjunction with designated Toys for Tots locations throughout the greater D.C.  area. Right now, Interstate employees are busy sorting the mountains of toys by family, and will load Interstate’s trucks early Christmas Eve morning for delivery to the children, alongside the Washington, D.C police and fire departments.  Interstate employees dressed as a special Santa and his elves will help bring an extra dose of holiday spirit to the event! As Bud Morrissette, president of Interstate, says “We never grow tired of seeing the smiles on the faces of the children.”We extend our sincere appreciation to all of those who donated toys and volunteered.  Happy Holidays everyone!

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Foundation was founded in 1947, shortly after Interstate’s own founding, and is dedicated to helping families in need during the holiday season. Despite the difficult economic conditions, the foundation has continued to remain dedicated to this cause.

Why use a ProMover?

They uphold ethical and honest business practices.
ProMover, the U.S. moving industry’s consumer protection and certification program, is designed to fight fraud by giving you an easy way to separate reputable, professional interstate movers from con artists out to make a quick buck at your expense. Every ProMover pledges to abide by all federal regulations and the American Moving & Storage Association’s Code of Ethics.

ProMovers are screened to save you time and energy.
The ProMover program takes the worry and the hassles out of moving by helping you easily identify quality professional movers. Every ProMover is only authorized to display the program’s logo after undergoing an extensive seven-point background check to make sure they’re who they say they are.

ProMovers take the guesswork out of the moving process.
Top tips for a successful move:

  • Be wary of phone or Internet only estimates. Get three in-home, written estimates and show the mover everything to be moved, including items in attics, basements, garages, storage areas, sheds, etc. Typically, at least two of the estimates will be close in price, weight, and service. Select one of those; movers with unusually high or low bids should generally be avoided.
  • Be wary of carriers seeking large down payments to hold dates or to reserve service.
  • Ask questions! The moving business can be complex and has its own jargon. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, or if the mover hesitates when you ask for clarification, talk to another company.
  • For interstate moves, obtain and read the required “pre-move” documents from your carrier: Your Rights and Responsibilities, Ready to Move?, and information on the arbitration program that the carrier participates in.
